{Sassy Schoolboy}

What I'm wearing today...

Channeling My Inner Schoolboy

Today I'm channeling my inner schoolboy. Over the weekend, I stopped by J. Crew and picked up a ridiculously perfect plaid blazer to go with my dark-colored toothpick jeans. Paired with gold jewelry, a fabulous orangey-red nail polish, my go-to fall/winter bag, a few spritzes of sexy perfume and some suede booties...I'm downright obsessed with the finished look! I've also been keeping it a little simpler these days with my makeup (I like a winged eyelid with a kohl liner, black lashes and a touch of blush/bronzer). I also decided my straight hair needed a little revamping this week; I've braided my hair into a bun and played around with curls! Big things are happening folks!!

Actually, they are. For one, I received a significant raise at work. Wahoo! I also just discovered that the back pain I've been enduring over the past several weeks is actually due to a herniated disk in my spine, which is also causing a nerve to be pinched. While this news sounds quite distressing, I'm very relieved to know exactly what the next steps are in the healing process! I've been given a neck brace to wear in the evening, a tens unit to wear whenever necessary and will be the recipient of several epidural cortisone injections. But I'm trying to stay positive! Though bummed I can't rock climb for awhile, I'm still able to work out (somewhat) and stay fit. At the end of the day, I'm a lucky lady...all things considered!

{Color Me Pretty}

Accessorize yourself with...

Pops of Color

I know I probably sound like a broken record. Color, color and more color. Sure, I love neutrals. Yes, I have plenty of brown, grey and black clothing to go around a time or two. But this season, I've decided to stop my routine of wearing mostly brights during the spring and summer seasons and start adding them to my fall and winter wardrobe as well. For instance...

I decided to invest in a few new items for my closet, including colored jeans. Cobalt, teal, maroon, rose, mint...I wanted to have more of a variety when it comes to pants. It's already proving to be worth the investment. I love a good, dark pair of jeans...but for those days when I want to wear a neutral-colored, over-sized knit sweater or spice up an otherwise traditional 'winter' outfit, these definitely do the trick!

Sometimes, just one piece of brightly colored clothing is enough to make a bold statement. Another item of clothing I love in a great color is a coat. Over the years, my coat collection has grown...and I'm slowly working my way through my favorite colors.

My top-pick color is red. It adds such a pop to your look and compliments every skin tone. I also have grown fond of mustard yellow, burnt orange, bright purple and kelly green. I've got my eye on a certain color this winter, but may need to practice a little self-restraint and add it to my wish list for now.

For me, a perfect fall outfit is a chunky sweater, paired with colored jeans, a lot of gold accessories and a fabulous pair of boots! Or perhaps a little black dress with colored tights and an eye-catching overcoat. Or maybe even...well, the possibilities are endless!

{Closet Refresh}

Indulge in...

A Closet Refresh

"If you can't see it, then you probably won't use it."
That's my motto when it comes to the refrigerator, pantry, bookshelf...and closet. I like to visually account for what I own in order to maximize its purpose. I'm borderline OCD when it comes to organization, but I enjoy switching up my wardrobe and playing dress-up! So in preparing for the fall & winter seasons, here are some tips on getting your closet (and dresser) in check:

Once a Year: Start off by doing an inventory of everything you own. Make piles of the things you (1) love & wear often, (2) sometimes wear, and (3) haven't worn in a year (or more). For the latter two piles, try on every piece of clothing. If it doesn't jump out at you as exciting, comfortable and/or stylish, put it in the (4) "giveaway" pile. Yes, breaking up with material goods can sometimes be difficult, especially if they hold sentimental value, but there is no reason to hold onto, say, your old prom dresses or other various items that you will never wear again. This goes for shoes and accessories as well. Do the right thing and donate these "once-upon-a-time treasures" to someone who will actually use them! Not only will you make someone else's day a little bit brighter, you now have room for new additions! Win-win situation.

Once a Season: Some things stay in style and some things never should have been in style in the first place. I'm a firm believer that you should re-evaluate your closet at the start of every season (specifically spring and fall), tossing items that keep appearing on hangers (and in drawers) but are never actually worn. Helpful tip: Turn all of your hangers backwards and as you wear things, turn them back around, facing the right way. This will show you what you do wear and what needs to be re-considered! If something is stained or ripped, trash it. Your closet should be filled with things you want to wear, not things you have to avoid.

Once a Month: Clean up and get organized! Take time to put things back in their proper place. Group clothes together based upon color, cut and/or length. This will make your closet easier to navigate and also allow you to come up with better outfits in a shorter amount of time.

I mentioned here about a few charities that welcome clothing donations, but there are so many local and national organizations that will not only take your goods, they'll pick them up from you too! Use resources at your church, office or school to give away your no-longer-needed clothing, shoes & accessories, and check out these sites as well:

{Wedge Boots}

Today, I am loving...

TOMS Wedge Boots
Cannot wait to try on a pair!

I absolutely love fall. Yes, the summer is (and has been) an awesome time. There is so much to do and enjoy outdoors, not to mention an abundance of sunshine! But as much as I've done and experienced this summer...I have an overwhelming excitement for the fall season. It's not just the skinny jeans, pumpkin spiced lattes, long sweaters, colorful leaves, knit socks, cool nights, apple orchard visits or desire to snuggle up by a bonfire that have me in a tizzy...it's also the knowledge that big things are in the works! And of course, it doesn't hurt that it's also boot season:

Oh, how nice of you to exist...

When I spotted these boots in the latest TOMS catalog, my [inner] socially responsible fashionista did a backflip. How stinkin' cute! You've seen TOMS mentioned on this blog many, many, manymany times...and maybe one day you'll even see them mentioned on my resume. Regardless, do yourself a favor and check out their products. I think the fact that I'm one of their biggest blog cheerleaders should automatically qualify me for a meet-and-greet with their Chief Shoe Giver...just sayin'. I don't ask for much, but when I do it's usually worth asking for ;)

The way I see it, this is always a win-win situation. You're desire to look fashionable and be comfortable also allows for a child to have better health and access to education...all because of a shoe. And not just any shoe, but a variety of footwear, sunglasses and other apparel as well. Trust me, I'll have you on the TOMS bandwagon in no time...

{2012 Olympics: Ralph Lauren's Biggest Mistake? }

Designer spotlight...

Ralph Lauren

I'm sure you've probably heard by now that Ralph Lauren was given the [lucky] task of creating the 2012 USA Olympic Team uniforms. Is it just me, or has this been one big fiasco? My initial reaction to seeing the photo above was this: I'm an American; not a Frenchmen. Now, I'm a sucker for a sharp-looking blazer...but it looks as if we're marching into the Olympic stadium trying to be something we're not...

Yacht club member?

Airline attendant?

Let me continue playing the part of "Negative Nelly" and point out the recent outrages about this collection: The opening ceremony outfits cost a cool $2000 per athlete. Oh that's right, we're not in an economic crisis or anything...with athletes struggling to raise money for their own families to go to London to watch them perform. And these uniforms are being manufactured in China? Okay, okay...let's try and roll with the argument that we're welcoming globalization with open arms...but what do you think of Ralph Lauren's response to all of the American fury?

 "For more than 45 years Ralph Lauren has built a brand that embodies the best of American quality and design rooted in the rich heritage of our country. We are honored to continue our longstanding relationship with the United States Olympic Committee in the 2014 Olympic Games by serving as an Official Outfitter of the US Olympic and Paralympic teams. Ralph Lauren promises to lead the conversation within our industry and our government to address the issue to increase manufacturing in the United States. We have committed to producing the Opening and Closing ceremony Team USA uniforms in the United States that will be worn for the 2014 Olympic Games."

Interesting. Nice save, Ralph? It's good to know that the company is thinking ahead! Because manufacturing American uniforms in the USA for this year's Olympics was a far-fetched idea in the first place? There is no apology or excuse made; this is a matter-of-fact reaction, because nothing can really be done at this point. Should they have defended themselves? Is there even a need to be defensive? It doesn't go unnoticed that there is a clear expectation that Ralph Lauren will be responsible for creating the uniforms for the 2014 Games as well. Confident, aren't we? My curiosity around this issue has lead me to dig a little more and explore some other responses to the designer dilemma:
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

1. This has caused such a ruckus that Democratic senators plan to produce the "Team USA Made in America Act" that mandates athletes be dressed from head to toe in American-made clothing. Is this for real or are we just trying to score some easy political points? Think about how much we collaborate with China when it comes to manufacturing. Granted, the idea of having our athletes clothed in American-made outfits should probably be a priority...but we as a country don't seem to have a problem when it comes buying Chinese-made products in other aspects of our daily life (see next point).

2. Let's consider that nearly 50% of our closets are made up of clothing made in China. Do you hate that 50% of your closet so much you want to throw it out? I didn't think so...and this is just clothes we're talking about.

3. Ralph Lauren moved most of its manufacturing to China over a decade ago and has been the official outfitter of the U.S. Olympic Team since 2008. Funny, I don't remember this uproar back then...but I do expect uproar when Ryan Lochte parades around in this sexy outfit:

4. Producing uniforms here in the States would fix the unemployment problem. Is this really a legit statement? A few dozen jobs for a short period of time, perhaps...but don't make stupid exaggerations.

5. "I think they should take all the uniforms, put them in a big pile and burn them and start all over again," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev. Wow, maybe we should step back and think about who we are voting into office? For someone who thinks the U.S. Olympic Committee should be embarrassed, I think the Senate may be the ones actually embarrassed.

6. The U.S. Olympic Team is privately funded, unlike most other teams. We should be grateful for the financial support from Ralph Lauren. This is a valid point, but I do believe that it is a realistic and feasible goal to design and produce our athletic attire here in the States...and it should have been encouraged and made public long before now.

7. In regards to the beret look: The must-have souvenir of the 2002 Salt Lake Games was a fleece beret produced by Roots, a Canadian company that was the official U.S. team outfitter for that opening ceremony. Maybe it's just me who isn't a fan of the beret look (a little too European), but evidently we keep going back to it:

2004 - Athens, Greece

2002 - Salt Lake City, Utah

1956 - Cortina D'Ampezzo, Italy

I'm sure you've heard your fair share of other reactions as well, but let's try and focus on the here and now: We are sending 500+ of our best athletes to London. And we are going to kick some serious ass. All in the spirit of good sportsmanship and world unity, of course ;) Whatever your opinion on the Ralph Lauren matter may be, the designer is still an American household name and has continued to create quite an Olympic collection:

Whether you choose to support the brand or not is your decision, but please make sure to support the amazing men and women who are representing our nation from July 27th - August 12th. My family is definitely in celebration mode...my little sister is even ringing in her 21st birthday with an Olympic-themed party! Get ready for a little stars & stripes action...

{Chevron Stripes}

Today, I am loving...

Chevron Stripes
Welcome to my future foyer...

There's something about chevron stripes that just makes me happy. They get noticed. They attract the eye, especially in bold colors, and make a statement. I love this. There are so many ways to play with this pattern, and I can't quite decide which is my favorite look...

Perfect fall outfit...

I'm a big fan of clean, modern prints...and it is no surprise that these designs are so popular. At home, in the office, on the body...you name it, there's a high probability that it comes in these expressive stripes. And why not? It is the perfect accent in any capacity...

How adorable are these towels?

I'm pretty much swooning over all of these chevron-esque ideas...and continually adding to my wish list. Just another reminder of how much I love the blog world and all the fantastic inspiration it has to offer...

Hope you all have a fabulous Friday!
