Celebration mode is in full swing! After sharing a wonderful Thanksgiving with family and indulging in a delicious display of food, the holidays are officially underway. According to my calendar, Thanksgiving Eve marks the beginning of an amazingly long period of festive shenanigans, social gatherings and a LOT of cooking/baking/eating. I love this time of year, especially since I am about to turn 25 at the end of the week! The past several months have been marked by many exciting travels, personal accomplishments and an abundance of grace. I'm looking forward to celebrating all that has been and is to come with the people I love most.


BUT! I also love celebrating the most important people in my life. While I enjoy doing activities with my family, I have such a blast giving them gifts as well. I got a little excited about all the recent deals going on that I'm pretty much done my Christmas shopping! I may or may not have harassed urged each of my family members into creating their wish lists ridiculously early, but I think they'll thank me for it later. And though there isn't anything I could possibly need, I also had a little fun picking up some items I've had my eye on for awhile...and created my own birthday/Christmas wish list. I have some really big wishes for 2013, but right now I'm incredibly thankful for all that I've already been given! Life is good :)

{She Works Hard For The Money}

Let's Talk Dollar$ and $en$e...

It's been awhile since I've touched on the importance of money but (let's be honest) us ladies (and gents) sometimes need a little kick in the hinkeycheeks to re-evaluate our financial needs and goals...

Since I was a little girl, I've had a decent understanding as to the value of money. It probably began with scrubbing my bathroom for a measly $5 as a kid...all for the sake of buying that newest beanie baby! Then there was the "family talk" when I was around 10 or so years old about compound interest and how it works. Oh, and that time in high school when I wanted my parents to buy me a car like everyone else's parents did? Yeah, that didn't happen. I got stuck with the clunker...but guess what? I learned to not only save my money, but also to think wisely about how I wanted to use and invest it. I bought my first car when I was 18 years old and was able to pay half of its total cost up front and manage monthly payments.

Now, granted, I am no money-saving machine. I struggle with saving just like everyone else. Therefore, since becoming a professional, I have made it a point to put a certain allotment of money into my savings account every pay day; the more money I make, the more money goes into savings. Seems easy enough. But I also have made it a rule not to take money out of my savings account for anything other than emergencies or wise investments. This actually has helped a lot, because it forces me to maintain a minimal amount of money in my checking account and keep my spending at bay. Trust me, if you set ground rules for yourself and allow your savings to build you will be one happy individual!

For some of you, this is not new information. You may already practice this habit (among others) as part of your savvy saving ways. Whatever helps you reach your financial goals, I'm on board! But for those of you trying to justify saving money or who are struggling to maintain money, here are a few great tips from Kiplinger:

{Pay yourself first}
Take care of your own financial needs so that no one else has to. Put yourself in the driver seat of your own monetary desires; being accountable and responsible are two very good qualities to have and maintain.

{Keep tabs on your credit}
Do you know your credit score? Do you monitor your credit report? This is something I have recently done in order to know where I stand in "credit land." Food for thought: think about using credit cards that you can get the most rewards from (cash back, frequent flyer miles, etc.) and constantly make sure to check your balances and pay your bills on time. The more money in your pocket, the bigger your smile.

{Build a solid emergency fund}
Always, always, always have an allotment of money set aside for emergencies. If you find yourself in a bind (this is life, and life can be a bitch), you will be very happy with yourself for having a "safety cushion" of money available when in need. Panick attacks can easily be avoided.

{It's okay to talk about money with your significant other}
Hell to the yes. I am all about this! For one, you need to know if you and your significant other are on the same page as far as financial needs are concerned. Money is a huge factor in many unhappy couples and, ultimately, failed relationships. It doesn't mean you have to necessarily "share" your money, but it does mean that you need to have an open and honest conversation about your financial goals and realistic spending habits. Don't make excuses.

{You have financial options for everything}
Save. Invest. Pay off your debt. Build up your 401(k) plan. You have options and ways to become educated in all of these realms; the decisions you make now affect your future in a way that I can only begin to touch on. You are currently living in a time where the economic crisis is real, influential and, in many scenarios, devastating to people's lives. You have no excuse for not thinking ahead. Get on it!

{Personal finance is empowering}
We want the best of the best. We are impulse buyers. We want it, and we want it now. You know, that's all great in a world made up of rainbows and unicorns, but we need to face reality. How much do you spend in a month? How much do you save? How much do you owe? Do you want to buy a house one day? Support a family? Being in control of your money is nothing short of an amazing feeling. I love it. I love finding deals for everything from shopping to traveling to wining & dining. Having a bigger picture in mind of what you want will help you save your money and make wiser financial decisions.

It is never too late to start making better decisions. Saving money doesn't mean you need to miss out on enjoying life or indulging in all it has to offer. It just means that you may need to start thinking twice about certain things. Don't be afraid to call yourself out. Do I really need [said item] right now? Could I get [this] at a cheaper price? As a female, I have to understand that women tend to live longer, earn less, and take breaks from the workforce for reasons such as caring for children. I've said it before, but women (especially) need to understand the importance of being in control of their finances; do not depend on anyone but yourself to get you where you need to go. Educate yourself, ask others for advice, seek out wisdom and stay informed. We want a lot, but we have to be willing to work save for it.

Money does not buy happiness, but it can help make dreams a reality and impossibilities possible. Write down those things which you would accomplish, own or partake in if you had the means to do so. Then create a timeline and game plan for how you will achieve those desires and make them a reality. I encourage you to take small (or big) steps toward financial freedom...for it is only you who can take the blame for not being where you want to be.

I think my ultimate dream job would be to travel the world in order to try new foods and then brag (via blog, of course) about which ones I like most. But I wouldn't stop there. Oh no no. I'd also want to travel the world in order to try new wines and then brag even more about how amazing my job is. So what exactly am I doing working for the government? Good question. But I gotta start somewhere! So I'll go ahead and kick off my passion for indulging in the finest foods with Baltimore's Winter Restaurant Week 2012!


DC's phenomenal week of wining and dining has ended and now it's Baltimore's turn to provide us with awesome deals and fabulous meals. Who doesn't want to snag a $15 two-course lunch or $30 three-course dinner at an over-priced-but-highly-delicious eatery? Check out the list of participating restaurants and treat yourself for a price you can't refuse at a place you've never been before. If you're not from the Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area, look online for the dates of your nearest city's restaurant week & book your reservations! {Fashion Vault 102}

It's almost time for Fall! Boots, scarves, jackets, skinny jeans, oh my! Autumn is a glorious time of year and, although my credit card is currently on strike (but hey, at least Verizon isn't!), I'm looking forward to the days of trying on the assortment of colorful clothing & leather goods that are plaguing our favorite stores. But not too fast; now is the time to grab last minute summer items (think next year) that are on sale and reasonably priced. I've said it before but it bears repeating: enjoy your money but be smart! Scout the internet for promo codes or online coupons when making a purchase. Be proactive and ask the sales rep at your favorite stores when they plan on having their next sale & make sure you're on their list to receive in-store coupons. If you have good credit and are well disciplined in the paying-your-bills-on-time arena, think about getting a credit card from your favorite store so that you simultaneously earn points towards future purchases while using it. At first, the thought of having additional credit cards made me cringe, but now I'm enjoying reaping the rewards!

{Flighty and Fabulous}

I love color. I love that which is vibrant. And I really love having fun with my makeup once in awhile. So when I was at the mall the other day picking up this adorable handbag I've been eyeing at a sale price I couldn't refuse, I happened to wander over to the MAC counter with my spare change. Hello color mascara!


I was a bit skeptical at first, but couldn't take my eyes off of the green; commence makeover by wonderful MAC rep. A little bit of orangey/brown eyeshadow and green mascara later, I was sold...but not enough to walk away with the product in hand. I was told this was a limited time offer, but didn't have that "you better buy it now or else" feeling.
Until the next day...

I made my girl's night start a smidgen earlier by stopping back to make the purchase and was told that all of the stores were now sold out of the mascara's. DISSmissed. However, I'm a determined lady...and all options were going to be tried. Now commence the wonders of online shopping on my iPhone + coupon gouging = two colored mascara's with free overnight shipping at the same total as if I was in the store (all under 10 minutes time). Bring 'em on!


I'm all about the pop factor, and I think this collection offers several fun colors for your summer palette without making you look like a drag queen. I have yet to try on the blue, but I'm hoping it turns out as nicely as the green! I'm not quite sure what "overnight shipping" means to MAC because it has now been two days since my purchase and I haven't even received my shipping confirmation, but I'm not fretting too much because it was free. If I've been scammed, you'll be the first to know (along with the unfortunate soul who receives my phone call). No worries though, because Sephora also has a selection of color mascara's as well!

{Steals & Deals}

I hope everyone had a splendid Easter! I'm a huge fan of bunny day, not only because I think it is the holiest of holidays, but also because I love spending quality family time on a lovely spring day. Between having everyone home from college for the weekend, partaking in a delicious fondue dinner, attending a wonderful church service, grilling kabobs & indulging in delicious desserts, and going on an Easter basket hunt (we're never too old for this game...the older we get, the nicer the surprises!), it was quite a bit of fun.


Spring is also a favorite time to shop for me. Enter, Mr. Self Restraint. As an American, I am a part of a culture that seems to accept being in debt; embarrassing, to say the least. As a woman, I believe it is necessary to take care of myself as best I can, including financially. I believe in saving money, paying my own bills (on time), always having a separate account (even if I'm married) and being 100% responsible for my financial actions. That is not to say I don't believe in sharing money with a future spouse or being spoiled by your significant other; I just think it is important for young women to understand the importance of depending on themselves. When we hold ourselves accountable for the money we spend, things become clearer: Where is most of my paycheck going? Am I meeting my savings goal every month? Could I have saved on that purchase? Do I feel good about my spending allotment? Am I spending money I actually don't have?


The answers can be a harsh but necessary wake up call. But wait just a minute? Is this not a blog primarily about fashion, shopping & giving in to the little things that make me feel fabulous? Well, of course it is! For my hard work, I set aside an allotment of money for myself to spend whatever way I see fit; of course, that is after I factor in bills & savings. There are plenty of fashion sites to pick up your favorite designer indulgences for a cheaper price (see my Fabulous Finds on the left side of this blog) as well as outlets that offer what you want for a price that actually makes sense. However, why not also save on beauty products, magazine subscriptions, rafting trips, winery visits, bike rentals, salon treatments, dinner dates & so on?

I say...the cheaper, the better. Sign up for Groupon and/or Living Social and receive daily emails on deals going on in your area! Perhaps there is a museum you would like to visit or a gym you would join if the cost was lower...this is where these sites are a great resource. WARNING: There are a lot of great deals out there; that does not mean go broke buying as many of them as possible!

Be smart about your money.
Have fun with it as well.

{Nautical Inspiration}

Though I have been a'slackin in my blogging lately...I have been quite the busy bee: venturing out in D.C. & Baltimore often, attending a phenomenal performance by KT Tunstall (courtesty of my sweetheart), and going on quite a shopping spree with momma bear! When your arms and back hurt from all of the bags you are carrying, there might be a slight addiction problem. However, it was pay day, I was off of work & ready to score some major deals. I am slightly majorly obsessed with the nautical look, so my ever-expanding nautical wardrobe is the inspiration for today's post. In honor of the upcoming summer full of BBQ's, pool parties & trips to downtown Annapolis, I've decided to share some of my favorite red, white & blue looks, with a splash of yellow:

{Live to Indulge}

If there is one thing I look forward to, it's a night out to an A+ restaurant. I can't believe I forgot to mention earlier that DC restaurant week was this past week...and my sister & I had a fabulous time at Fogo de Chao on Saturday (I think we are STILL full from our feast!). To make up for my forgetfulness, and to include you in on just how wonderful these deals really are...it's Baltimore Restaurant Week! {Fashion Vault 101}

What are the things I love? Fashion? Shopping? Amazing Deals? Oh yes, how silly of me...I'll take all three! Like I've mentioned before, regular price tags make my credit card cringe & want to cut itself up...so having an "in" on fabulous sales is what my bank account highly approves of. One of my favorite online sites to receive promotions & sales information for is eBay's Fashion Vault. Up to 70% off on some of my favorite designers? Why, yes please!


Rue La La is another one of my top sites, with boutiques offering discounts out the...latest designer handbag ;-)


Bluefly claims it is the "ultimate hook-up for the fashion obsessed" and I think they do a pretty good job, allowing you to view merchandise via your choice of designer.


Of course, there are several online venues that help you find a good deal, in addition to the sale sections of your favorite stores. It never hurts to have the upper-hand on what is currently fabuloso without the jaw-dropping price tag. {Make It Personal}

After traveling, I often find it somewhat stressful to go through the hundreds of pictures I have taken while away. Which one's do I want to print out? When will I find the time to scrapbook? Wouldn't it be fantastic to create a calendar out of these memories?! Well, thanks to online sites like snapfish and shutterfly, I have created my own photo books, calendars & posters on a whim! With the holidays quickly approaching, skip the long lines at the mall & go for a more personal touch. These sites offer great deals (so join the mailing list & keep an eye out) on just about everything...and they literally let you design just about anything. {I Love LUCY}

After receiving a lot of questions about where I picked up my workout gear, I figured I would divulge one of my best-kept secrets. Who doesn't want to know about a fabulous find? So, here starts off a blog where I will share with you that which I love! When I first started my job with the federal government, I was thrilled to find out there was a gym on-site. A facility where I can choose when to fit in my workout during the day, complete with everyday exercise classes & fully equipped locker rooms with showers?! Count me in! To celebrate my new job, my mom picked up a t-shirt & yoga pants from a store called lucy in Bethesda. The second I saw these adorable cotton pants my heart sank: the waistline looked large enough for a 3rd grader to squeeze into. Automatic return. However, after about a week sans yoga pants, I decided to try on these leggings that the store clerk promised would fit my size. I secretly said a prayer and voila! They fit perfectly. You know, the kind of pants that suck in the middle and accent the rear (the kind all of us women hold sacred). I have since been back quite a few times and have LOVED every piece of gear I own. A bigger plus to lucy activewear is the generous sale section both in stores and online (we all know our credit cards cringe at regular price tags).
