{Sassy Schoolboy}

What I'm wearing today...

Channeling My Inner Schoolboy

Today I'm channeling my inner schoolboy. Over the weekend, I stopped by J. Crew and picked up a ridiculously perfect plaid blazer to go with my dark-colored toothpick jeans. Paired with gold jewelry, a fabulous orangey-red nail polish, my go-to fall/winter bag, a few spritzes of sexy perfume and some suede booties...I'm downright obsessed with the finished look! I've also been keeping it a little simpler these days with my makeup (I like a winged eyelid with a kohl liner, black lashes and a touch of blush/bronzer). I also decided my straight hair needed a little revamping this week; I've braided my hair into a bun and played around with curls! Big things are happening folks!!

Actually, they are. For one, I received a significant raise at work. Wahoo! I also just discovered that the back pain I've been enduring over the past several weeks is actually due to a herniated disk in my spine, which is also causing a nerve to be pinched. While this news sounds quite distressing, I'm very relieved to know exactly what the next steps are in the healing process! I've been given a neck brace to wear in the evening, a tens unit to wear whenever necessary and will be the recipient of several epidural cortisone injections. But I'm trying to stay positive! Though bummed I can't rock climb for awhile, I'm still able to work out (somewhat) and stay fit. At the end of the day, I'm a lucky lady...all things considered!

{Wedge Boots}

Today, I am loving...

TOMS Wedge Boots
Cannot wait to try on a pair!

I absolutely love fall. Yes, the summer is (and has been) an awesome time. There is so much to do and enjoy outdoors, not to mention an abundance of sunshine! But as much as I've done and experienced this summer...I have an overwhelming excitement for the fall season. It's not just the skinny jeans, pumpkin spiced lattes, long sweaters, colorful leaves, knit socks, cool nights, apple orchard visits or desire to snuggle up by a bonfire that have me in a tizzy...it's also the knowledge that big things are in the works! And of course, it doesn't hurt that it's also boot season:

Oh, how nice of you to exist...

When I spotted these boots in the latest TOMS catalog, my [inner] socially responsible fashionista did a backflip. How stinkin' cute! You've seen TOMS mentioned on this blog many, many, manymany times...and maybe one day you'll even see them mentioned on my resume. Regardless, do yourself a favor and check out their products. I think the fact that I'm one of their biggest blog cheerleaders should automatically qualify me for a meet-and-greet with their Chief Shoe Giver...just sayin'. I don't ask for much, but when I do it's usually worth asking for ;)

The way I see it, this is always a win-win situation. You're desire to look fashionable and be comfortable also allows for a child to have better health and access to education...all because of a shoe. And not just any shoe, but a variety of footwear, sunglasses and other apparel as well. Trust me, I'll have you on the TOMS bandwagon in no time...

{Backpacking 101}

One's destination is never a place,
but a new way of seeing things...

The time is finally here! AHHH! I have been craving this trip for awhile and am overwhelmingly excited for the adventures in Europe that await me! Having backpacked before, I know that one must prepare for the good, the bad and the ugly...because let's be honest, sometimes life likes to throw us lemons. BUT, no matter what the circumstance, there are always good stories to be told after the fact ;) Backpacking, in any capacity, can be a tricky feat. In my case, I won't exactly be roughing it too much...but there are some essentials to keep in mind for when you go on your own European adventure! Therefore, I share with you...

Victoria's Backpack Breakdown
Backpaking 101
{Big Ticket Item}
The number one decision you need to make when thinking about backpacking (aside from what destinations you will be visiting) is what kind of backpack you need! Sure, if you want to go from city to city with a supersized luggage carrier...be my guest. I promise to be the first person laughing my arse off at your overly confident ridiculousness. Backpacking is a much easier and efficient way to travel if you are going to multiple places. Then again, maybe you should hit the weight room for a little while before going on such an endeavour, as you will be carrying everything you need. A backpack for traveling Europe might be a little different than, say, hiking the Pacific Crest Trail. Think wisely. How long is your trip going to be? How much space do you really need? What size will best fit your body type? Is this backpack going to draw a lot of attention over other options?

{Personal Items}
A money bag is something that will house your most important items (passport, license, cash, medical card, tickets, etc.) and can be worn close to the body. Make sure you don't choose something overly large or bulky, as you will constantly be wearing it...and possibly sleeping with it on. This is not meant to be a fashion statement; the goal here is not to get robbed. You'll have enough trouble trying not to get pickpocketed as it is. And that's not a joke.

{Self-Direction}
Unless you are going to be using Google Maps via smartphone the entire time you travel, grab a map of the city you're in and familiarize yourself with where you are and where you might want to go. Marking it up with a pen or highlighter won't hurt...especially when you're 5 beers in and you really want to find that hostel you're supposed to pass out at. I'm not saying map out your entire stay, but get familiar with your location. I like collecting maps from my favorite cities, and sometimes the locals come up with some real winners! Also, a journal is a fabulous idea. It keeps track of your day-to-day experiences, serves as a way to keep in contact with friends you meet along the way, records your daily expenses (or maybe that's just me), and is a good idea overall for when you need to write down information. You'll thank yourself later. Trust me.

{Safety First}
Small locks are always a plus when backpacking. No, they probably won't keep someone from breaking into your stuff, but they can be quite a deterrent. If it's either you or the guy next to you without locks...well, I think you know where I'm going with this. Also, one should never travel without a first-aid kit. Whether it's a need for band aids to mend a blister or ointment to calm a burn, they almost always come in handy for one reason or another. Sewing kits (like the ones from hotels) are also wonderful in emergency situations; a tear in clothing can be a dire situation if you have a small amount of it! And always, always, always bring a small roll of duct tape. It's one of the best inventions of the 21st century. You'll see why.

{Body Essentials}
Feed your body with H2O. Keep a water bottle handy and make sure to stay hydrated. Protect your skin as well; make sure you buy a sunscreen that you like (I prefer dry-touch sunblock) and avoid sunburn; protect your lips with chapstick. You're also going to want to shield your eyes as often as possible, so bring a pair of legit sunglasses (you might want to leave the designer shades at home) with you on your trip. Additionally, you're going to need a towel that can serve multiple purposes; bathing, as a blanket or a pillow, etc. I have a microfiber towel that is just enough to cover my body but is super lightweight and dries easily. In the event of colder weather, or a possible chilly night, a light blanket will make a huge difference; take note that some places might not provide bedding/sheets so be prepared. Similarly, a small pillow might come in handy!

{Clothing}
I wish I could pay someone to pack for me. But I'd probably just end up re-packing myself. The hardest part of this whole process is what to wear, especially if you're only bringing a few days worth of clothing for an extended period of time. Familiarize yourself with the weather forecast for where you're going and stick to the basics. Solid colors are always a good choice because you can change an outfit at the drop of a hat by adding a scarf or other accessories. Scarves are awesome because they can serve as a head covering, shawl, top (yes, I've done it) or other accent. You will get sick of seeing the same patterned clothing in all of your photographs...and though you might not have a lot of options to choose from, you need to remember that this is about comfort and practicality over fashion. I do try my best to balance both. Whatever you pack, you want it to be as light as possible and easily washable. If you're going to need a dryer or iron, don't bring it! And remember, you can always shop while traveling as long as you can carry it ;)

{Shoes}
Again, just as hard as packing clothes. It really all depends on the weather. My experience has been warmer weather, so a good pair of walking sandals and tennis shoes were my options. If you're backpacking, chances are high you will be a movin' and a shakin' often, so take this part of the packing process seriously. Yes, we all want our shoes to match our outfits (again, maybe that's just me) but I can promise you...when you're hanging out with backpackers, the last thing they care about is what you're wearing on your feet. However, they might notice the funky discoloration that is a direct result of bathing in public places without wearing shower shoes (urban myth?)...so perhaps a cheap pair of shower flip flops would be a good addition to your travel wardrobe!

{Laundry}
All this talk about what to wear, you want to be mindful of the lovely task of washing your own clothes on a consistent basis...often in a sink. I can tell you I've never been more excited about a sink stopper before in my life. The reality is, you might not have a washer available...and spending the time at a laundry mat (if there even is one) while traveling is not really the best use of time. So having a clothesline or rope to hang clothes on (preferably overnight) is essential. Little packets of laundry detergent are great since you will probably only need a little at a time. Also, stick a few dryer sheets in your backpack. You might not ever use them for dryer purposes, but they keep your stuff smelling clean...and could potentially be an aroma lifesaver.

{Accessories}
Besides a few pieces of cheap statement jewelry to take an outfit from a day-to-night look, a day bag might be a good idea. Again, it shouldn't take the place or function of a money bag, but you may want to carry maps, snacks, water, etc. around during the day when your backpack is in a safe place. A rain poncho is a must-have item, no matter what the weather forecast says; better to be safe than sorry. An ipod/earphones or other source of music/podcasts is going to be great for flights, train rides, bus trips or just hanging out. However, be mindful that you should never take anything you can't afford to lose. That said, you should definitely bring a camera...but try to back up your photos to an online account every once in awhile (at an internet cafe, perhaps) so that in the event you lose it, at least you don't lose everything. This might sound obvious, but a book is also great to have during during down time (layovers, long lines) and you can usually leave them behind at hostels. Only Chelsea Handler could have brought me the joy I experienced in what could have been the most tragic of travel mishaps...

In the words of my mother...
...make good choices!

I am so excited for the memories that are waiting to be made and for the adventures that will impact my life in a very special way. I am a firm believer that when you discover your ability to find pure joy in the simple things, the big things will always be an added bonus. Keep me in your thoughts and prayers as I embark on my European journey for the next few weeks!

{Easter Baskets Gone Wild}

Today, I am loving...

Easter Baskets
I love Easter. I enjoy going to church on Easter Sunday, basking in the warmer temperatures and spending time with family. Now I don't know about you, but I really miss partaking in easter egg hunts. Just this past weekend, our neighbors held one for their grandkids and it was adorable to watch all of the kiddos running around hunting for eggs. Why don't we get that excited over candy anymore? Well, maybe egg hunts aren't as popular for us adults...but what about giving and receiving Easter baskets? I decided to have some fun and put together a few "themed" baskets for those of you who enjoy this aspect of the spring holiday. Perhaps you have a parent, friend or significant other you want to create one for...enjoy!

{The Giving Ballerina}

Today, I am loving...

TOMS Ballet Flats

My love, Blake Mycoskie, has done it again! Not only does TOMS offer canvas shoes & eyewear, they are now also selling ballet flats! I have been patiently waiting for this shoe launch...and patience really isn't my virtue. But it was worth the wait! For you newbies...I have written about my love for this company here, here and here. What girl doesn't love a ballet flat? I mean, they are simple, comfortable and adorable. And who doesn't love buying a shoe knowing that another pair will be given to a child in need? We dish out green for so many silly things in life, so why not snag a great shoe and help out a fabulous organization? I am so excited to go check these out and try a few pairs on!

What was that? You wanted to buy me a pair of these flats in a size 8? A Valentine's Day gift perhaps? Well, whether you want a pair for yourself or for someone else, there currently is a $5 coupon that you can use toward your purchase at AutismUnited.org. I've said it once but I'll say it a thousand times more...great company, great mission. In fact, I'm wearing a pair of TOMS today at work :)

The man. The legend. Le sigh.
"She explained that those 3 boys were her sons, and for the past year her sons had been sharing a single pair of shoes. Her oldest son had been walking to school, coming home, giving his shoes to his brother, and he had to wait until Thursday to go to school again. Now all of her sons could go to school every day and they got to walk there together." - Blake Mycoskie

{If the Shoe Fits}

If you have been reading my blog since its inception, you probably know I like TOMS shoes, love the idea behind TOMS shoes and am in love with its founder, Blake Mycoskie. Trust me when I say I have absolutely no problem taking a pay cut, moving to Santa Monica and working in a cubicle made of plywood if it means being a part of such an awesome company and, obviously, being closer to Blake. (I'm not creepy or anything ;-) So, when I spotted these on a blog I knew they had to be mine:

Note: I get a tad bit grumpy when I do not find quick answers to my questions, so I was very disappointed when I could not find these on the TOMS website. Hence, I went back to the source of the picture and finally discovered that the owner of the shoes actually bought a pair of creme TOMS, some fabrics and her friend made them for her! Pure genius. I love the creativity! Talk about being unique! Isn't it awesome to see the end result of other people's hard work and be motivated to try something new and out of the ordinary?

{Billion Dollar Empire}

No, I wasn't signed to a be a promising TV star at the age of six months with the potential of running a billion dollar empire by the age of 25...unfortunately. However, I give a big hip hip hooray to two young women who not only entertained my younger years but continue to amaze me with their style, grace & business tactics. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are the most famous twins that I know of; they are also geniuses. Bravo to the parents who made sure that MK & A were very involved in everything they set their mind to, whether it be acting, attending college or fashion design. I read parts of their latest book, Influence, a long time ago and, after seeing it again recently, cannot wait to buy my own copy; it is a composition of the girls' personal reflections on what they have learned and the people (specifically in the fashion industry) who impact their continuing work.

Despite the fact that MK & A seem far removed from us (the general public) due to their celebrity status, I think they are two of the most relatable fashion designers us American women can appreciate. They are young, spirited, and attempt at finding the balance between enjoying life and working hard at it; hence, the birth of their fashion labels. An entire industry was born out of Ashley Olsen's mere desire to create "the perfect t-shirt" when she couldn't find one that fit the bill. But wait, isn't their line, The Row, extremely expensive compared to Elizabeth and James or Olsenboye? How relatable is that? Well, true...I, personally, will not be going on a Barney's New York shopping spree anytime soon (or ever), but let's look at the three distinct lines and break down the ideas beind the Olsen twins Dualstar conglomerate.

1. The Row is a high end, luxury brand embraced by seemingly older women, from business executives to the first lady, that started out with Ashley's search for the perfect white t-shirt. What began as a line comprised of t-shirts and leggings morphed into cashmere sweaters, fur jackets and leather pants that one would pay a pretty penny for. Unlike many designers whose target audience are those who wish to cling to their younger years, The Row's customers are largely made up of middle-aged women. Why? Well, the Olsen's appear to embrace the power and promise of maturity. Instead of encouraging women to revert to their younger years, The Row relishes the idea of indulging in their most productive ones. The line is all about evoking a professional yet luxurious persona. Make note: besides handbags and certain knits produced in Italy, the Olsen's firmly believe in manufacturing their line in New York & L.A. Not only is the line glamorizing hard-work, but it is putting revenue back into the American economy.

What is TOMS doing in a post about the Olsen's fashion sense? Oh, yes...TOMS shoes and The Row are collaborating on a line for Fall 2011 that will range in price from $98 to $150 and include plaid, herringbone and cashmere. If you've kept up with this blog, you know my love for TOMS and its cause! For every pair bought, a pair is given to a child in need. Maybe the clothing from The Row is out of our league, but I will be looking forward to seeing this collaboration come to life.

2. Elizabeth and James is a contemporary sportswear line named after MK & A's younger siblings. The line is actually based on a relationship between a boy and a girl, in which the clothing is supposed to carry out their story. It is a clash between femininity and masculinity, consisting of blazers, skirts, leather jackets and other casual wear. While the line is not as expensive as The Row, pricing can range from $150-$725; not exactly chump change. One might argue against the belief that this line is for a sophisticated individual who understands fashion and designer products but doesn't want to pay designer prices...but at the same time, don't we support the notion of paying for designer quality at a more afforable price?

3. Olsenboye is a clothing line created exclusively for JC Penney, inspired by stylish cities around the world. It is the most affordable of the three lines, featuring an array of clothing and accessories. Interestingly, social media is a big part of the marketing behind the line; there are a series of web films that revolve around different girls chosen to act as brand ambassadors. Each girls represents a specific style and look, and the films portray the different Olsenboye collections via storytelling. To take it a step further, each girl has her own respective blog, which not only allows the customer to visually gain ideas on how to wear the collection, but also gives insight into that girl's personality. Direct interaction between label and consumer? Cue in, Smarty Pants Dance.

Their badass, beautiful & brilliant. These two ladies have stayed away from being a Hollywood cliché; they keep their lives & work under wraps as much as possible, focusing solely on what their good at and banking on that very thing. Even when the tabloids exploited MK for a period of time, she seems to have proven that what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Successful women who can shine in the spotlight yet still be humble? America, we need more of these role models!

{Fashion Aid}

In one of my earliest posts, I wrote about wearing your philanthropy with the example of TOMS shoes. Now, with the news of the devastating tsunami that has taken Japan by brute force...there are other opportunities to not only give, but also to wear your donation...

On March 11th, a massive earthquake hit the Pacific Ocean nearby Northeastern Japan, causing damage with blackouts, fire and tsunami.

Several individuals and organizations have begun to support relief efforts for this disaster, including many in the fashion world. Lady Gaga has just designed a $5 tsunami relief "We Pray For Japan" bracelet available for purchase on her website, with all proceeds being donated to Japan.

Show your support for Japan with this wristband!

Uniqlo, a fashion community based out of Japan, is donating over $20 million to the Japanese Red Cross Society (both in cash and in clothing) as well as setting up donation boxes in its stores.

A new-style Japanese firm making good casual clothes available for all to wear.

Though this catastrophe is recent, it would be no surprise to see more of the fashion world gathering together in support of Japan. Many of us saw a huge support in "Fashion for Haiti," and, due to the fact that Japan's Fashion Week was supposed to kick-off next week, many in the industry will be affected by this tragedy.

There are many other organizations that are raising awareness and funds for Japan. Not all of us know where its best to donate or have much to give, but prayers are very much needed and cost nothing! For many of us, Japan may be out of sight...but don't let it be out of mind

{Wear Your Philanthropy}

The moment I saw Blake Mycoskie on the second season of the Amazing Race my heart literally skipped a beat. Adorable. While visiting Argentina on the show, Blake discovered that numerous children (and people in general) were without shoes. This caused several easily avoidable problems, including foot disease and lack of education for the children who could not attend school without footwear. After a heart-breaking loss that left Blake & his sister in second place on the show, he returned to Argentina and decided to start a for-profit company out of California that would design an Alpargata inspired shoe; for every pair sold, another pair would be donated to a child in need.

Marry me Blake? This genius "One for One" mentality enabled Blake to return later that year with his newly assembled staff and "drop" 10,000 shoes for Argentinian children. Today, numerous "shoe drops" are made possible by TOMS shoes. I'm still a little jealous my sister got to meet Blake and win 10 free pairs of Toms, but I am so glad this company exists...trust me, there is nothing nicer than throwing a pair of these on when you're in need of a comfy shoe!
