{She Works Hard For The Money}

Let's Talk Dollar$ and $en$e...

It's been awhile since I've touched on the importance of money but (let's be honest) us ladies (and gents) sometimes need a little kick in the hinkeycheeks to re-evaluate our financial needs and goals...

Since I was a little girl, I've had a decent understanding as to the value of money. It probably began with scrubbing my bathroom for a measly $5 as a kid...all for the sake of buying that newest beanie baby! Then there was the "family talk" when I was around 10 or so years old about compound interest and how it works. Oh, and that time in high school when I wanted my parents to buy me a car like everyone else's parents did? Yeah, that didn't happen. I got stuck with the clunker...but guess what? I learned to not only save my money, but also to think wisely about how I wanted to use and invest it. I bought my first car when I was 18 years old and was able to pay half of its total cost up front and manage monthly payments.

Now, granted, I am no money-saving machine. I struggle with saving just like everyone else. Therefore, since becoming a professional, I have made it a point to put a certain allotment of money into my savings account every pay day; the more money I make, the more money goes into savings. Seems easy enough. But I also have made it a rule not to take money out of my savings account for anything other than emergencies or wise investments. This actually has helped a lot, because it forces me to maintain a minimal amount of money in my checking account and keep my spending at bay. Trust me, if you set ground rules for yourself and allow your savings to build you will be one happy individual!

For some of you, this is not new information. You may already practice this habit (among others) as part of your savvy saving ways. Whatever helps you reach your financial goals, I'm on board! But for those of you trying to justify saving money or who are struggling to maintain money, here are a few great tips from Kiplinger:

{Pay yourself first}
Take care of your own financial needs so that no one else has to. Put yourself in the driver seat of your own monetary desires; being accountable and responsible are two very good qualities to have and maintain.

{Keep tabs on your credit}
Do you know your credit score? Do you monitor your credit report? This is something I have recently done in order to know where I stand in "credit land." Food for thought: think about using credit cards that you can get the most rewards from (cash back, frequent flyer miles, etc.) and constantly make sure to check your balances and pay your bills on time. The more money in your pocket, the bigger your smile.

{Build a solid emergency fund}
Always, always, always have an allotment of money set aside for emergencies. If you find yourself in a bind (this is life, and life can be a bitch), you will be very happy with yourself for having a "safety cushion" of money available when in need. Panick attacks can easily be avoided.

{It's okay to talk about money with your significant other}
Hell to the yes. I am all about this! For one, you need to know if you and your significant other are on the same page as far as financial needs are concerned. Money is a huge factor in many unhappy couples and, ultimately, failed relationships. It doesn't mean you have to necessarily "share" your money, but it does mean that you need to have an open and honest conversation about your financial goals and realistic spending habits. Don't make excuses.

{You have financial options for everything}
Save. Invest. Pay off your debt. Build up your 401(k) plan. You have options and ways to become educated in all of these realms; the decisions you make now affect your future in a way that I can only begin to touch on. You are currently living in a time where the economic crisis is real, influential and, in many scenarios, devastating to people's lives. You have no excuse for not thinking ahead. Get on it!

{Personal finance is empowering}
We want the best of the best. We are impulse buyers. We want it, and we want it now. You know, that's all great in a world made up of rainbows and unicorns, but we need to face reality. How much do you spend in a month? How much do you save? How much do you owe? Do you want to buy a house one day? Support a family? Being in control of your money is nothing short of an amazing feeling. I love it. I love finding deals for everything from shopping to traveling to wining & dining. Having a bigger picture in mind of what you want will help you save your money and make wiser financial decisions.

It is never too late to start making better decisions. Saving money doesn't mean you need to miss out on enjoying life or indulging in all it has to offer. It just means that you may need to start thinking twice about certain things. Don't be afraid to call yourself out. Do I really need [said item] right now? Could I get [this] at a cheaper price? As a female, I have to understand that women tend to live longer, earn less, and take breaks from the workforce for reasons such as caring for children. I've said it before, but women (especially) need to understand the importance of being in control of their finances; do not depend on anyone but yourself to get you where you need to go. Educate yourself, ask others for advice, seek out wisdom and stay informed. We want a lot, but we have to be willing to work save for it.

Money does not buy happiness, but it can help make dreams a reality and impossibilities possible. Write down those things which you would accomplish, own or partake in if you had the means to do so. Then create a timeline and game plan for how you will achieve those desires and make them a reality. I encourage you to take small (or big) steps toward financial freedom...for it is only you who can take the blame for not being where you want to be.

{Chateau de Victoria's Favorite Things of 2011}

I don't know about you, but I am totally missing Oprah's Favorite Things segment! Those shows were by far some of the best. Now, unlike Oprah, I will not be giving away the things on my personal favorite list (lame, I know) but I figured I would still share them with you :-) And who knows, maybe one day I will have a billion dollars and be able to have incredible giveaways of my own...when I marry an heir to an oil company. I'll work on that, but back to the point of this post...I give you...

15. Finding Personal Happiness

There are so many favorite things to choose from! I knew from the beginning that 2011 was going to be full of excitement; a year of making big decisions, taking risks and following my heart. While I can't exactly put it into pictures, I am quite proud of what I have accomplished this year and the strength I have shown through it all. Luckily, I still have one more month of surprises (and more favorite things?) to look forward to!

And while tangible things can be fun, I think Steve Jobs said it best...

"My favorite things in life don't cost any money. It's really clear that the most precious resource we all have is time."

{Fashion Vault 102}

It's almost time for Fall! Boots, scarves, jackets, skinny jeans, oh my! Autumn is a glorious time of year and, although my credit card is currently on strike (but hey, at least Verizon isn't!), I'm looking forward to the days of trying on the assortment of colorful clothing & leather goods that are plaguing our favorite stores. But not too fast; now is the time to grab last minute summer items (think next year) that are on sale and reasonably priced. I mentioned here about my favorite budget-friendly fashion websites (i.e. ideeli and Rue La La - view the whole list under my Fabulous Finds tab), but check out these other great sites when updating your wardrobe or home!

Everything on this website is $100 or less!

A luxurious online fashion outlet!

An invite-only website with top designer deals!

I've said it before but it bears repeating: enjoy your money but be smart! Scout the internet for promo codes or online coupons when making a purchase. Be proactive and ask the sales rep at your favorite stores when they plan on having their next sale & make sure you're on their list to receive in-store coupons. If you have good credit and are well disciplined in the paying-your-bills-on-time arena, think about getting a credit card from your favorite store so that you simultaneously earn points towards future purchases while using it. At first, the thought of having additional credit cards made me cringe, but now I'm enjoying reaping the rewards!

{Fabulous in Floral}

Come on, Spring! You are such a tease. I've never seriously considered moving to sunny California more in my entire life. I love you, East Coast...but I'm about to bid farewell to you & yours for a little while. I am very ready to be in 24/7 dress mode...and my brain has been focused on floral fashion recently:

My Easter Dress!
(I have already fallen in love with this collection; my credit card, not so much)

(Pop Factor: bright belts worn properly!)

(Love the sheer, casual look)

(Dress with pockets = always a winner)

(I'll take the legs with the dress, please)

{Fashion Vault 101}

What are the things I love? Fashion? Shopping? Amazing Deals? Oh yes, how silly of me...I'll take all three! Like I've mentioned before, regular price tags make my credit card cringe & want to cut itself up...so having an "in" on fabulous sales is what my bank account highly approves of. One of my favorite online sites to receive promotions & sales information for is eBay's Fashion Vault. Up to 70% off on some of my favorite designers? Why, yes please!

Rue La La is another one of my top sites, with boutiques offering discounts out the...latest designer handbag ;-)

Bluefly claims it is the "ultimate hook-up for the fashion obsessed" and I think they do a pretty good job, allowing you to view merchandise via your choice of designer.

Of course, there are several online venues that help you find a good deal, in addition to the sale sections of your favorite stores. It never hurts to have the upper-hand on what is currently fabuloso without the jaw-dropping price tag. That said, here's one more morsel for you that I am obsessed with: ideeli! Don't forget to check out the travel section!!

{Stuff Your Stocking For Less}

Patience. It really isn't one of my virtues. However, I am working on it. Especially when it comes to shopping. Between coupons, discounts and continuous sales there is really no reason to pay full price for everything I want need. Do you pay full price for every grocery item you purchase? Your car? Your house and everything it it? Exactly. That is just absurd. Now, in order to avoid being a hyprocrite, I'll admit that there are things that cross my line of vision that I am willing to pay full price for (within reason). Sometimes there are things worth having sooner than later, but with a little bit of research and the willingness to wait for a better deal...you'd be surprised at how much more you can get for your green. With the holidays (and your credit score) in mind, get more for less! Here are some gift giving ideas all under $50 at nordstrom.com!!

{I Love LUCY}

After receiving a lot of questions about where I picked up my workout gear, I figured I would divulge one of my best-kept secrets. Who doesn't want to know about a fabulous find? So, here starts off a blog where I will share with you that which I love! When I first started my job with the federal government, I was thrilled to find out there was a gym on-site. A facility where I can choose when to fit in my workout during the day, complete with everyday exercise classes & fully equipped locker rooms with showers?! Count me in! To celebrate my new job, my mom picked up a t-shirt & yoga pants from a store called lucy in Bethesda. The second I saw these adorable cotton pants my heart sank: the waistline looked large enough for a 3rd grader to squeeze into. Automatic return. However, after about a week sans yoga pants, I decided to try on these leggings that the store clerk promised would fit my size. I secretly said a prayer and voila! They fit perfectly. You know, the kind of pants that suck in the middle and accent the rear (the kind all of us women hold sacred). I have since been back quite a few times and have LOVED every piece of gear I own. A bigger plus to lucy activewear is the generous sale section both in stores and online (we all know our credit cards cringe at regular price tags).

A Few of My Favorite Pieces:

So East Coast girls, in keeping an eye out for great wear and great deals remember this, quality is always better than quantity!
